Ontario Line South
Ferrovial Construction Canada Inc. and VINCI Construction Grands Projects are to design, build and finance the Ontario Line Southern Civil, Stations and Tunnel (South Civil) package.
Working together as Ontario Transit Group we are currently mobilizing our design and construction crews, with major works to commence in 2023. The South Civil contract is anticipated to be completed in 2030.
The project will strengthen Ontario’s economy by supporting an estimated 1,500 jobs at the peak of construction.
What is the project?
- A six-kilometer tunnel and associated tunnelling works from Exhibition to Don Yard portal (west of the Don River)
- Stations:
- One above-ground station to be integrated with the existing GO Transit Exhibition Station
- Two underground stations to be integrated with the existing TTC Osgoode and Queen subway stations
- Four new underground stations (King/Bathurst, Queen/Spadina, Moss Park, Corktown)

Job Description
Contribute to the success of Ontario Transit Group's Ontario Line South project as a Site Geologist. Join a dynamic, collaborative environment, where your expertise in structural geology and proficiency in geological software will play a crucial role in the project's overall success.
What you will undertake:
Supervise Secant Pile Drilling:
- Utilize geological expertise to assess the depth of bedrock accurately based on the existing Geotechnical design.
- Provide recommendations and collaborate with the design team to assess the pile embedment based on geological findings to ensure structural integrity.
Open Cut Excavation:
- Geological face mapping during open cut excavations (but not limited) in soil and bedrock.
- Apply structural geological knowledge to assess joint features orientation.
- Assess and collaborate with the design team to identify the most suitable geological class support. Experience or knowledge using RMR and GSI classification is necessary.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain detailed records of geological observations, drilling activities, and bedrock assessments.
- Generate comprehensive reports for project stakeholders, highlighting key geological considerations and their impact on construction activities.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including Geotechnical Engineers, Project Managers, and Contractors, to ensure seamless integration of geological aspects into the project.
- Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to convey geological findings and recommendations.
NATM Tunnel Experience:
- Possess experience in the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), contributing to the overall tunneling aspect of the project.
- Geological face mapping during SEM excavations in soil and bedrock.
- Attending Permit to Tunnel meetings for the selection of temporary support of SEM excavation and cut and cover excavation.
Instrumentation:
- Experience in the interpretation of instrumentation data and participating on Monitoring Action Team meetings to decide the action plan when trigger levels are achieved.
Design:
- Review of SEM and SOE design reports.
- Review Request for Information and Design Field Change requests.
- Review of Non-Conformances.
- Development of Technical solutions to comply with the construction requirements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or a related field.
- Proven experience in supervising secant pile drilling and assessing bedrock depth in construction projects.
- Strong background in structural geology, with a focus on joint description and orientation.
- Experience in open cut excavation methodologies, ensuring geological considerations are incorporated.
- Knowledge of the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is a definite plus.
- Experience with Georgian Bay Formation.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work in a very fast-paced construction environment.
- Technical software such as DIPS, Wedge, Unwedge.
- Experience with Finite Element Model (FEM) packages will be an advantage.
- Knowledge and previous experience with rock mass classification systems such as RMR, GSI and Q-system.
- PEng or PGeo certification is considered a plus.

Company Description
Scope of work for the Ontario Line South Civil design-build-finance package includes:
- A six-kilometre tunnel and associated tunnelling works from Exhibition to Don Yard portal (west of the Don River)
- Groundworks required to build the tunnels and stations; utility and conduit works to prepare for the Rolling Stock, Systems, Operations and Maintenance (RSSOM) mechanical and electrical systems; guideway structures and facilities to prepare for the track structure to be installed by the RSSOM contractor.
- Stations: One above-ground station to be integrated with the existing GO Transit Exhibition Station. Two underground stations to be integrated with the existing TTC Osgoode and Queen subway stations. Four new underground stations (King/Bathurst, Queen/Spadina, Moss Park, Corktown).
When completed with the northern section of the Ontario Line, the new subway line will be a 15.6-kilometre subway line with 15 new stations to the and will run from Exhibition Place, through the heart of downtown, all the way to the Ontario Science Centre.
